Secure Your Income Tax E-filing Account from Misuse: CBDT

In an advisory issued to the taxpayers, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has asked to take care with their tax e-filing account so as to secure an equivalent from any misuse by any unauthorized person. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has asked to report any such cases to the authorities at the earliest.

“If you think that your e-Filing account may are compromised or accessed in an unauthorized manner, then you'll be a victim of cybercrime. Please report the incident to the concerned police or cyber-cell authorities as a primary step,” the I-T department said in an advisory.

According to the tax department, the taxpayers can file online criminal complaints or FIR by visiting https://cybercrime.gov.in/, an initiative of the govt of India. The portal facilitates the filing of complainants and reporting cybercrime complaints online. Any information concerning the cybercrime are going to be shared by the tax department with the relevant enforcement authorities.

“As a general precaution, please don't share your login credentials or other sensitive information,” the tax department said.

The e-filing account of a private or entity is accessed by logging on to the online portal of the department– https://www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in and is employed by taxpayers to file their tax returns (ITRs) and perform a number of other tax-related works.

A senior official said the advisory has been issued within the wake of increased vulnerability and attacks on online systems because the country and therefore the world battle the COVID-19 pandemic and more online systems are getting used thanks to a serious cutting down of human interface.

ITR Due Dates may extend till September 2020

The government is considering a proposal to extend the deadline for filing personal income tax returns to September 30 from July 31 because of the lockdown. The last date for paying advance tax has already been extended till June 30 from March 31. A senior finance ministry official said the CBDT was considering an extension of the last date to file personal income tax returns to September 30 from July 31. Besides the date for advance tax, the government has extended the deadline for employers to issue TDS certificates, or Form 16, to June 30. Tax practioners said it would be difficult for employees to file their income tax returns by July 31 — the normal deadline for most individuals to file ITRs — if they get their Form -16 (TDS certificates) as late as June 30.
